The 2016 Fuel Up to Play 60 (FUTP60) Student Ambassador Summit was a success. Two students and one Program Advisor from Washington attended and represented our state. They were joined by 156 students and over 56 Program Advisors from around the county at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.
Among the three people from Washington to attend the Summit was our 2016/2017 Washington State Student Ambassador, Peter from Moses Lake School District! Peter will be going into 9th grade and is so excited about getting FUTP60 started in his new school. Peter is a big sports fan and loves to make music. He was especially excited to attend the Summit along with his Program Advisor Rita Gardner, a P.E. teacher at Frontier Middle School in Moses Lake. “[FUTP60] helped me learn to be responsible and gave me more leadership qualities,” says Peter.
Our second representative, Ashley, is the sister of Washington’s former State Student Ambassador, Sydney. Ashely will be going into 7th grade and is excited to continue to learn how to implement the program in her school. “This program is important because it teaches me to be a leader,” Ashley said.
From cook-offs to the first ever FUTP60 Student Summit dairy farm tour at Fair Oaks Farms, the participants were busy for all three days of the Summit. Special appearances from NFL Players and NFL Alumni got the students excited to learn more about how to be a leader in their schools through the FUTP60 program. Students were challenged to work in teams to create a smoothie recipe that would be healthy and tasty but also met the USDA school meal regulations. The students also got to practice their public speaking skills after they were asked to write a speech on one of three topics. Each student had the opportunity to give his/her speech to their peers. The Summit concluded with an exciting and competitive NFL Flag Football tournament with three NFL Alumni players.
Although the Summit was very busy – all participants left with excitement and enthusiasm to bring back to their home towns and schools. Look forward to great things to happen in Washington from our new FUTP60 Student Ambassadors, Peter and Ashley. Here’s to the new successful FUTP60 school year!
